Letter: Balancing budget on backs of infants, toddlers, disabled children a short-sighted mistake — Champaign Health news

Proposed budget cuts to District 65’s Early Head Start, Head Start, preschool transportation and School-Age Childcare would make raising children in Evanston untenable for our most vulnerable neighbors. As a D65 educator and a parent, I know these cuts represent an unethical decision that would trade long-term community health for a short-term fiscal fix. In 2000, Evanston voters passed a referendum to build the Joseph E. Hill Center, promising a centralized early childhood hub. Now, the school board is preparing to break that promise by proposing the closure of Early Head Start (ages 0-3) and Head Start (ages 3-5).
